Getting Started - Personal Trainer

Hey Warriors!

You've just set your goal, and wrote down the how-to steps on reaching that goal, so naturally the next question is where do I start? In our world where everyone is trying to capitalize monetarily on fitness goals (which is fine), people have no idea where to start. Supplements, gear, meal plans, workout plans, Instagram, where do you start? The answer is extremely simple, start by working out.

If you are just beginning to workout, sign up for a gym with ample amount of equipment and just start working out. Russian scientists from the USSR studied gains in Class III as opposed to Class I athletes, and it shows that the novice athletes experience the most gains. As a beginner, you are a blank canvas and one of the most important things you must learn is how to listen to your body. Take a month, try EVERY fitness movement you know, and begin to listen to your body, What movements does your body like and dislike, which muscles are tight, how does your body react to exercise? After a month, of consistent time in the gym, I would now recommend going to a trainer. You now know your body, and it will help most trainers immensely in their ability to help you,

A lot of people will choose the internet over a trainer, and it is always a poor choice. I will give you the fact that not all trainers are the most competent of people, but that is true is every profession from doctors to mechanics. It is all ultimately related to their passion for their work. Where the internet is a powerful tool, people do not fully grasp the reasoning behind what they're doing. Bodybuilding.com is a very common tool which people use, and although there is a wealth of knowledge on the site, a lot of it is things that worked for that specific person. In my first blog I talked about how the key to Russian weightlifting dominance was the individualism of the program because everyone is unique. Most trainers know this, and they are able to design programs specific to your needs. You may be saying, but Marshal, my trainer is on that site. Well, either get a new trainer if they are copy and pasting workouts, or understand that they may be able to navigate the millions of articles to pick and choose things for yourself. Everyone needs a guide on their fitness journey, it is crucial.

The fitness world is constantly changing, that is why it is imperative to have a guide that is not just the internet forums. Whatever your profession may be, there is constant growth and advancement in whatever you may do. As a member of your profession, it is your responsibility to understand the advancements and improvements shaping your profession. When you sign up with a trainer, understand that their profession is the ever-changing fitness world. Every week there seems to be a new development in a supplement, or a certain exercise and the best trainers in the world are constantly on top of these advancements, if not making their own. The best trainers I ever had, my university strength and conditioning coach and the owner of the gym I attending through high school had one thing in common, they were always locked away on their computer learning and studying new ways to train. The advancements these men made by constantly learning and adapting is the foundation for ANY successful trainer. Now, if you have the time to be reading up on all these new studies, and fully comprehend them, I would still recommend a trainer.

You may understand a lot in regards to fitness, you also may be on top of all the recent breakthroughs, but the most valuable thing about a trainer, is the coaching. No matter how talented we are, we can always be better. When Ray Williams hit his 1 069 squat, I guarantee you he was not satisfied, but immediately thought what could he improve and how he's going to hit a 500Kg squat. You will do things during a lift that you may not even be aware of, and a coach will see it. This leads to coaching cues, something a coach will say pre- and intra- lift to help an athlete improve form. No athlete on the planet can give themselves these cues under extreme weight, a coach can.

You've set your goal, and a good personal trainer will help guide you in the right direction in achieving this goal. The best way to learn Calculus is to have a mentor break it down and teach it to you, and physical fitness is no different. If you're ready to step into your fitness journey, I would love to guide you in the right direction, you just have to reach out to valhallaperformancecenter@gmail.com and I would love to help you!

Happy Lifting,

Marshal
