Goal Setting
How's it going Warriors?
I was sitting down thinking, where does one start their fitness journey? Signing up for a gym? Picking out the ideal diet? Watching a bunch of CT Fletcher videos on YouTube (which you should be doing anyway)? Then it dawned on me, no matter the person, every athlete enters their fitness journey with a goal. Regardless if its as broad as, "I want to maximize my athletic potential" to as specific as, "I want to be able to lift 225 pounds for 8 reps on my left leg for Bulgarian split squats". As easy as it may seem to set a goal, people often overlook the most important part of goal setting, the road map!
The road map is the how-to steps to achieving the goal you set out. This will make your big goals seem more attainable, and gives you the ability to see your progress on your way to your goal! As a quick example, say an athlete comes to me and says, "In one year, I want to be the strongest powerlifter in Canada". You need to determine what the athlete needs to obtain in exactly one year, for the sake of this argument lets say its a 1 000 pound squat, 800 pound dead, 700 pound bench. You now have an actual numerical value your athlete needs to obtain. Now we see what we're starting with, lets say it is 900 Pound Squat, 825 Pound Dead, and 675 Bench Press. The athlete needs to improve his squat by 100 pounds at a minimum, has a better dead and 25 pounds on bench. Substantial gains in the squat, minimal gains in dead and moderate gains in bench press are necessary to hit to obtain goal. Now the athlete will go into what it looks like day by day, week by week, month by month on his journey to obtain his goal. By doing this, you are setting daily goals to obtain, weekly goals, and monthly goals. You will never go to bed without knowing whether you are on your path or if you are straying.
Now that you have the tool of goal setting, one must ask, what is my goal for my physical fitness journey (although this applies to life)? Whatever the goal is, the only important thing is putting measurable numbers on the goal. If you wake up one morning and determine, my goal is in one year to look better. It is a very common goal in our society, and the reason why so many fail is because they do not put any numerical measurements on their goal. What does looking better look like to you? A lower bf%? Bigger biceps? Broader back? Once you determine what your better look likes, you can measure your progress! This means, no matter what your fitness goal is, set the damn goal! Too many people in this society predicate their movements on whatever their friends, family, coworkers etc. deem acceptable.
I'm sorry if this may offend you, but when it comes to what is attainable in life, the only person who knows whats capable is you. Its not your parents, or best friend, or teachers choice on what you can accomplish in life. The only one able to limit you, is yourself. It is a hard pill to swallow, but every failure in your life is one persons fault, yours. Everytime I failed a test in university I was always looking to other issues as an excuse for me not achieving greatness. When I realized I did not reach my potential as an athlete, the first thing I did was turn around and look for excuses in my life, but guess what, all my failures are my own damn fault. It is one hard damn pill to swallow, but once you realize this, think of the opposite. This means, every success in your life is solely on you. People help yes, but it was you that accomplished your goal. I own my failures, but it was also me that earned a football scholarship from every program in Canada, I earned a starting job at 17 years old, I earned my physical training certificates, I will earn my degree,
Now you know your life is a choice, take it how you want it. The successful people recognize this as a positive, for it means whatever the hell they want is within their grasp if they're willing to work. The people who go nowhere in life are the ones that get offended, close the blog, insult the author, and be a victim in this world. I chose the name Valhalla because it is a reminder of a place, where only the greatest warriors would enter. When you come to me with a goal, look at it as your personal Valhalla. You have to bust your ass day in and day out to enter the halls of your personal Valhalla for it is only for the worthy. To loop this into goal setting, and breaking it down to how it looks like daily, when you go to bed, can you say that you can enter your Valhalla? Tomorrow is not guaranteed. When I went through a bout of meningitis, and I felt that feeling of "what if I don't wake up?" my life changed. My legacy was piss poor, and all due to my actions. I realized how finite tomorrows are. You may be hit by a bus tomorrow, or an airplane crashes into your home, you do not know, SO START YOUR JOURNEY TO YOUR VALHALLA TODAY.
If you need motivation, reach out to me and I will help you on your journey, no matter what it may be. The gym is the setting I choose to help people because there's no cheating yourself in the gym. You can tell the entire world you bench 3 plates, but when you're under that bar, the weights do not care who you have convinced, gravity does not care how many people you've impressed, you have to lift those damn 3 plates. You grow daily in the gym, at a celluar level. Grow towards your goal, reach out to me, and I will help. Sometimes we need guidance on our journeys and I want to help those in need of guidance.
If this doesn't make you want to start your journey, check your pulse.
